Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Does the measure increase sales tax? For how long?

Yes. The initiative will raise Madera County sales tax by 1/4 of a percent. This tax increase will remain in effect until it is repealed by a voter initiative. Sales tax funding is designed to grow with Madera County in perpetuity.

Will the measure shut-down the current Madera Animal Shelter?

No. The New Shelter Initiative is intended to expand Madera County Animal Services and create a new, improved shelter in Madera County. It will also allow for the addition of a low-cost vet clinic to serve Madera County residents.

Will the current Madera County Animal Shelter staff loss their jobs?

No. The New Shelter Initiative will expand Animal Services resources and add jobs. Current County employees will retain their positions and benefits.

Are funds raised by the sales tax overseen by an independent non-profit board?

Yes. Tax revenue funding will be overseen by a non-profit board of citizens in conjunction with Madera County managers. This structure encourages fiscal responsibility and allows citizens to have a say in how the Animal Services department allocates funds.

Will the New Animal Shelter maintain a “no-kill” status?

No. The shelter will maintain the same “low-kill” model that is currently being utilized by Madera County and most other California county animal shelters. The goal is always to rehome as many animals as possible, as quickly as possible to minimize animal stress, trauma, and long-term harm. Humane euthanasia will only be used as a last resort.

What areas will be served by the New Shelter Initiative?

All of Madera County, including the City of Madera and Chowchilla. Animal Services in these incorporated and unincorporated areas will be consolidated into a single Animal Services division for enhanced operational efficiency and to ensure that sales tax funding extends benefits to everyone living in Madera County.
